A lesson in doing the right thing

About a year ago I was sitting in the bleachers watching my grandson play 10-year-old league baseball and overheard a woman talking to her son. Since I was sitting directly in front of her, I could hear the entire discussion, although she was speaking very quietly.

It seems that the young boy had found a dollar somewhere in the area around us near the concession stand and wanted to use it to buy candy. She quietly explained that someone had lost the money and he needed to see if anyone claimed it. So she sent him to the concession stand to ask if anyone had asked about the money. He returned and said no one had as of that time. She said that if the money wasn’t claimed by the time everyone had gone, it could be his.

After a time, I heard him ask if it was OK to eat some candy he had and she wanted to know how he had paid for it. Of course, he had paid earlier with the money he had found. She told him to return the unopened candy and leave the money at concessions. It was not his to spend until all efforts had been made to return it to the person that had lost it. It turns out that no one claimed the dollar, and she did let him have it after everyone left the field.

During the exchange, I turned my head to see who this person was. I was surprised to see that it was Mayor Tammy Fisher! I don’t know her personally and I doubt that she knew I overheard the exchange. That much fuss to teach the boy that we don’t keep what is not ours even if it’s only a dollar! She was very quiet and discreet and brought no attention to herself or the boy. Apparently, honesty is something she believes in — and she “got caught doing the right thing when no one is watching.”

We need someone to represent us that understands and believes in the concepts of individual and family values, which includes honesty and integrity no matter how old you are or who you are. This is one reason Tammy Fisher is our family’s choice for Senate District 4. Please consider her when you go to the polls.
