GREAT FALLS — Todd Thayer’s first career hat trick allowed Missoula Sentinel to top Glacier 4-2 in the third/fourth place match on Saturday at the Class AA boys state soccer tournament at Siebel Fields.

Thayer scored goals at 7, 16 and 77 minutes. The last one was a penalty kick and iced the game for the Spartans, who won their first state trophy since 2002.

Glacier (9-6-3) was seeking its first ever hardware for boys soccer.

“We wanted to get that,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said of a state trophy. “We were just a little shy this year.”

In two regular-season meetings, Glacier beat Sentinel 3-2 and tied 3-3.

“Sentinel played really well,” Billiet said.

“They came out a little sharper than we did. We came out a little sluggish, made some adjustments.”

Glacier had 18 shots on goal to 17 for Sentinel.

Ryker McIntyre had eight keeper saves for Glacier.

“Early in the first half, (Brandon) Purdy hit one off the crossbar,” Billiet said. “We had our chances. We generated a lot of good opportunities today.”

Glacier appeared in its first state semifinal game on Friday, falling 1-0 to Missoula Hellgate.

Bozeman (12-1-2) defeated Hellgate (12-2-1) in the championship match 1-0.

Nate Hense scored the only goal of the contest off a corner kick by Benjamin Wollant in the 11th minute. It was the third-straight championship for the Hawks.

Great Falls C.M. Russell edged Bozeman 1-0 in the girls championship match.
