Football: Undefeated Glacier starts playoffs with Billings West

Top-ranked Glacier opens Class AA football playoff action Friday at Legends Stadium versus Billings West in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal matchup.

Glacier is 10-0 on the season and also the top seed for postseason play. West enters with a 4-6 record and is the No. 8 seed.

Those two teams opened the season back on Aug. 29 in Billings with Glacier posting a 31-7 victory.

Glacier (11-2) finished second last year, falling to Bozeman (13-0) 24-14 in the title game.

Bozeman (5-5) is seeded seventh this year and will play at No. 2 seed Helena High (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Semifinal play will take place Nov. 14 with the championship game at the highest remaining seed on Nov. 21.

Butte, Missoula Sentinel and Helena Capital made the playoffs a year ago, but missed out this fall. Replacing those teams are Missoula Big Sky, Billings West and Billings Senior.

Postseason actions continues Saturday with quarterfinal action at Whitefish (Northwestern), Butte Central (Southwestern), Belgrade (Central) and Billings Central (Eastern). Those four teams earned first-round byes for last weekend by winning regular-season championships.

Miles City (8-2) faces Whitefish (7-2). Miles City won a wild first-round game at home last Saturday with Havre, 48-47 in overtime.

As long as Whitefish keeps winning, it will have the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Semifinal play will be held Nov. 15 with the championship game on Nov. 22.

Bigfork stays home for the second-straight playoff weekend, entertaining Malta on Saturday in quarterfinal play at 1 p.m.

Bigfork (8-1) rolled in last weekend’s first round, crushing Deer Lodge 44-7. Malta (6-3) advanced by slipping by visiting Roundup 20-17.

The Bigfork/Malta winner hosts the Fairfield/Huntley Project winner.

Semifinals will be held No. 15 with the championship game on No. 22.
