Give Evergreen every chance to grow
It’s great to see the highway and storm-water drainage projects underway in Evergreen. Some motorists have been impacted by the improvements, but the end result of the $3.6 million upgrade will greatly benefit the community.
By the same token, we see real value in the enterprise overlay zone created for Evergreen nearly a year ago to boost business growth. The county approved the emergency measure to allow a variety of light industrial uses in addition to the commercial business zones along the U.S. 2 and Montana 35 corridors.
The overlay zone was effective for one year, and the Flathead County Planning Office is recommending the zone be extended for another year to give the planning tool ample time to work.
The county commissioners will hold a public hearing next month before considering the extension, and we urge our county leaders to keep the enterprise zone in place.
Evergreen is an important community in the Flathead, both commercially and residentially. It behooves the county to give it every chance to succeed.
Playoff fever is in the air
The intensity is ramping up for local high school football teams.
It’s playoff time and three Flathead Valley teams — Bigfork, Whitefish and Glacier — are still very much in the hunt for state gridiron honors. A fourth valley team, Columbia Falls, had its hopes dashed on Saturday with a loss in the opening round of Class A football playoffs.
That leaves three teams in three different classifications facing key playoff games at home this weekend.
Bigfork already has a playoff win under its belt and will host Malta on Saturday in the Class B quarterfinals.
Whitefish, the Northwestern A regular-season champion, hosts Miles City in a Class A quarterfinal on Saturday.
Weekend playoff action kicks off Friday night at Legends Stadium when Glacier hosts Billings West in the opening round of the Class AA playoffs.
Glacier, undefeated and largely unchallenged in an unprecedented run through regular-season competition, will have home-field advantage all through the playoffs if it keeps winning.
Good luck to all our playoff teams on the field this weekend.
