Hockey: Wolverines sweep Cobras in Butte

BUTTE — Aleksei Garin scored a little more than a minute into the second overtime period to lift Whitefish to a 2-1 win over Butte on Saturday in Western States Hockey League play. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Wolverines after a 5-2 comeback win on Friday.

Garin’s goal was the only shot of the second overtime, coming on assists from Danny Roe and Bryan Polmear. Roe opened the scoring early in the first period, scoring his third goal of the weekend on assists from Ian Wiens and Tyler Latimer.

A power play goal tied the game for Butte late in the second period, before each defense locked down.

On Friday, Whitefish rallied from a three-goal deficit to score five straight goals and lead off a successful weekend.

Butte opened with a pair of goals in the first period and scored shorthanded in the second period to take a 3-0 lead.

The Wolverines’ power play took control the rest of the period. Seconds later, Brett Fernandez notched the first for Whitefish on assists from Chase Ball and Riley Ingalls. On Whitefish’s next power play opportunity, Roe buried a goal on passes from Polmear and Garin.

Whitefish started the third period quickly, Stosh Mroz scoring less than three minutes into the period, then assisting the go-ahead goal five minutes later to Evan Carter. Roe capped the scoring and on an assist from Carter midway through the final frame.

Brendan Duff played more than 126 minutes in goal in the two games, making 28 saves on Friday and 25 on Saturday.
