Hockey: S. Oregon powers past Whitefish
WHITEFISH — The Whitefish Wolverines outshot Southern Oregon 49-31, but couldn’t find the net outside of the power play, besting Spartans goalie Tymen Edelkoort III just one time in a 4-1 Western States Hockey League loss on Friday at Stumptown Ice Den to end a two-game winning streak.
The Wolverines (2-4) fell behind a few minutes into the contest but worked their power play, capitalizing on a high sticking minor to even the contest at 1-1 on a goal from Kieffer Helbing, his first for the club after posting three assists in their first six games.
Southern Oregon added another goal on its power play in the first and two more power play goals in the third period. The Spartans scored on three of their four power plays in the game, while the Wolverines were just 1 for 10.
It was the first of a three-game set with the Spartans, who return tonight at 7:05 p.m. to the Ice Den. The game was also the first of a six-game homestand for Whitefish.
