Kaleb Frame scored a penalty kick in the closing minutes of the first half to give Flathead a 2-1 lead over Glacier (4-2-3), a score the Braves (2-6-0) would hold through the final 40 minutes to top their crosstown rivals in a boys soccer match on Saturday at Kidsports Complex.

Frame’s corner kick came seconds after the Braves looked to take the lead. Flathead played a ball into the box and as a player was fouled it squirted out to an open Jace Darrow, who buried it for what seemed the go-ahead goal.

Instead, the play was called dead, leaving Frame to score his second goal of the half on a penalty kick.

“It was good of Kaleb to keep his wits about him and still put the ball into the back of the net,” Flathead coach Dan Ferguson said. “He’s been our leader. He’s been the guy that puts the game on his shoulders and has been scoring goals when we most need them. He had a great game today.”

Frame’s first goal came in the 32nd minute to tie the game at a goal apiece, scoring on an assist from Carter Warnell.

Glacier senior Brandon Purdy opened the scoring in the 14th minute on a cross from Rohit Tappeta to give the Wolfpack the early lead.

It was just the second conference win for Flathead and the second loss this season for the Wolfpack. Glacier won the first contest 1-0.

“Glacier’s having a good season,” Ferguson said. “We’ve been hot and cold all season as far as gaining momentum for ourselves.

“It was good to see the boys come out on top and fight through to earn the victory for ourselves. The challenge going forward is to play like that in every game.”

GIRLS

The highly anticipated girls crosstown soccer match was a showcase of Kalispell’s goalkeepers as the Glacier Wolfpack and Flathead Bravettes played to a scoreless tie at Kidsport Complex on Saturday.

The match saw Glacier register twice as many shots as Flathead, but Bravette netminder Zoe Zander turned away 12 shots to keep her side in the match.

Glacier’s keeper, Amy Braig, stopped six Bravette shots to keep Flathead at bay and the final whistle sounded without either squad finding the net.

“We couldn’t find the back of the net,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

“Zoe Zander is an outsdang keeper and really kept them alive. Amy Braig stepped up big on our end.”

Glacier outshot the Bravettes 16-8 and had seven more corner kicks, causing Flathead to adjust at halftime to counter the Wolfpack attack.

“Glacier really came out well. They controlled the possesion in the first half. they were ready go and carried out a very effective strategy,” Flathead coach Cory Wilson said.

“We were forutnate to go into half 0-0. We made some halftime adjustments, and in the second half we created more opportunities and played a more even game. All in all, it was a great effort for the girls.”
