Schnebel responds to voting discrepancy

Democratic Flathead County commissioner candidate Stacey Schnebel offered a more detailed explanation Monday about her alleged voter registration discrepancy, saying she interacted with various county agencies that never informed her to update her voter registration.

Flathead County Republicans last week accused Schnebel of illegal voting because she continued to vote in Whitefish city elections after she moved to Coram several years ago. They claim she violated state election laws and have asked County Attorney Ed Corrigan to investigate.

A phone call made last week by the Daily Inter Lake to Corrigan has not yet been returned.

Schnebel sent a letter to the Inter Lake Monday afternoon, noting that after moving to Coram in 2007 she did indeed continue to vote in her Whitefish precinct “not just twice, but six times.”

In 2012 she updated her voter registration to her Coram precinct.

“The bottom line is, this is not a case of a malicious intent to affect elections in Whitefish,” Schnebel said. “Election judges verified my Coram address and gave me a ballot at my Whitefish precinct, even after my official address changed.”

Schnebel is running against Republican Phil Mitchell for the District 1 commissioner seat currently held by Cal Scott. Her letter is printed in its entirety on today’s editorial page.
