WEST GLACIER — Samantha Mundel of Columbia Falls defended her Northwestern A divisional cross country title on Saturday as did the Whitefish girls on the team front.

Mundel was the lone girl to finish under 19 minutes with her time of 18:51.8

Whitefish’s Sarah Latcham, 19:39.6, was second and Barrett Gray, 20:22.4, third.

The Whitefish girls, with 31 points, finished nine points ahead of second-place Polson.

Whitefish had four runners in the top 10, as did Polson.

“It was a little closer than I had hoped,” Whitefish coach Sarah Brist said of the team race.

“The girls ran a great race. They are where we wanted them to be at this time. Winning conference was one of the goals.”

Whitefish’s Peyton Twete was fifth, 20:38.0, and Sarah Perez crossed the finish line in ninth place, 21:17.2.

For Polson, Ryan Harrop was fourth, 20:31.0, Malia Seeley sixth, 20:45.4, Izabella Seemann seventh, 20:50.8, and Quinn Motichka 10th, 21:28.2.

Meredith Stolte of Columbia Falls placed eighth, 21:09.8.

Frenchtown had too much speed and balance on the boys side in winning the divisional crown. The Broncs had five runners in the top nine spots and finished with 28 points.

“We knew it would be tough to beat Frenchtown,” Brist said.

The Whitefish boys won the divisional last year.

“All the boys ran their best, had good races,” she said.

Whitefish, led by divisional champ Keaton Grove, finished second with a 37 total. Grove flirted with the 16-minute mark, posting a time of 17:04.0. His margin of victory was almost five seconds.

“It was the first race he won all season,” Brist said of Grove.

“He broke away from them (Frenchtown runners) about 400 meters out. He came sprinting down the finish.”

Whitefish had three in the top five. Ethan Lannaghan had the fourth best time, 17:28.4, and Ethan Potthoff was fifth, 17:33.4.

Polson’s Zach Evertz was seventh, 17:50.6, while Glenn Morden led Columbia Falls, finishing 10th in 17:55.7.

Individuals finishing in the top 10 spots earned all-conference honors.

The cross country season concludes on Saturday with the All-Class State Meet at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena.
