GREAT FALLS — Thomas Trefney scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and Glacier cruised to a 58-0 Class AA football victory over Great Falls High despite playing its backup quarterback for three quarters.

Starting quarterback Brady McChesney went 4 for 6 for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter, pitching an 80-yard pass to Logan Jones on the first drive and a 21-yard score to Trefney on another. McChesney sat the rest of the game after tweaking a leg injury late in the period, leading the Wolfpack to a healthy 28-0 lead when he left.

Trefney was the story of the night, running the ball 15 times for 103 yards and four touchdowns, including one in the air. Along with a punt return from Jones, the two combined to score each of Glacier’s six first-half touchdowns, giving the Wolfpack a 42-0 lead.

The early scores gave the Wolfpack plenty of breathing room for backup quarterback Leif Ericksen to relax and guide the offense.

Ericksen, who has seen extended time in the second halves of games this season, threw his first touchdown pass of the season in the third quarter. The junior signal caller found Caleb Jones for a 15-yard touchdown after halftime to give the Wolfpack a 49-0 lead early in the second half. Ericksen finished 5 for 9 for 50 yards.

The Glacier defense did the work from there, preserving the shutout while scoring twice. Senior cornerback Cain Boschee recovered a fumble and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown before the defense forced a safety on the next possession, putting the game far out of reach.

Glacier held the Bison to minus-6 yards rushing on 34 attempts, keeping the team to 171 yards total.

The Wolfpack can secure the top seed in the state and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win next week against Flathead (3-6).
