The weekend ended on a positive note for Flathead’s volleyball team as the Bravettes knocked off fourth-ranked Helena Capital 25-19, 27-25, 14-25, 27-25 Saturday afternoon at Flathead High School in a Western AA match.

Flathead (11-10 overall, 5-6 league) lost to Capital in Helena earlier this season in five sets.

Flathead lost to Helena High, a team it beat earlier this season in three sets, at home on Friday night.

“Offensively we were a lot more consistent today,” Flathead coach Leon Wilcox said.

“More diverse offensively. We had more hitters on target today.”

Flathead had 54 kills to Capital’s 38.

Lizzie Sherwood had 15 kills for the Bravettes.

Capital (7-3 league) led in blocks 10-4, and digs, 70-56, but Flathead ruled in assists, 46-33, and aces, 11-8.

Jourdon Schultz had four aces for Flathead.

“Our serving was a key factor,” Wilcox said.

“We forced not only a lot of aces, but one-option passes.”

Wilcox said he was impressed with the “fight in us” in winning those wild second and fourth sets.

“We finished well,” he said.

“We battled back. I’m proud of how they went out and it was senior night.

“It’s nice to knock off the No. 2 team in our conference,” he added.

Flathead concludes regular-season play on Saturday at Missoula Big Sky.
