Grizzly bear shooting investigated

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is investigating a report of a self-defense shooting of a male grizzly bear in the Lower Thompson River area on Sunday. 

The person who shot the grizzly reported the incident to the state wildlife agency, which is investigating.


The Kalispell Police Department got a call from a business on U.S. 93 about a very cranky old man who decided to yell at the calling party. Another employee was crying in the back room while the man was screaming at the front desk and his wife. It apparently was over a bill the man owed.

A young man on Liberty Street was looking for a confrontation with a bike owner. The caller said the young man was being very rude and disrespectful, claiming he found his brother’s bike in the caller’s shed. He had an open container and bolt cutters and was looking for bikes. Later in the evening, two tires were slashed on the caller’s vehicle.

A 60-year old man was drunkenly cussing out people at a church on Second Avenue East. Churchgoers wanted him removed but he got on a bike and skedaddled.

A man on Fifth Street West was attacked by two dogs and was bitten on the hand. The dogs ran out onto the road and attacked him and his dog. He threatened to shoot them with his pistol if the police didn’t take care of them. They were picked up and the owner called.

A man on River View Drive called officers to remove his friend from his house. The man had been drinking and was in the garage without pants on. He refused to get dressed for the reporting party. He was not combative but was passive-aggressive and refusing to leave.


The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office took a call from a residence on Meadow Hills Drive in Kalispell reporting 10 pumpkins had been stolen during the night. Initial speculation was that the thieves really wanted to make some pumpkin pies.

A man on Three Mile Road called about an angry property owner who accused the caller of hunting on his property. The man claimed the caller’s son had wounded an animal on his property. The caller said his sons were in the military, so this was unlikely. The caller wanted to pre-empt any calls to law enforcement.

A caller on Kings Way in Kalispell was offered marijuana and “dope” (which he believed meant meth) by a man who had been hanging around the neighborhood.


The Columbia Falls Police Department received a call from a Third Avenue East resident who saw small boys shooting at each other with pistols and wanted it checked out. Police found the boys were using Airsoft pistols and had safety equipment.

A family was crawling all over a car near the train tracks on Railroad Street and the caller was concerned they might be in danger or trespassing. The family was trying to take pictures.


The Whitefish Fire Department took a call about a motor vehicle fire on Fawn Trail at 2:20 p.m.


The Evergreen Fire Department took a call about a structure fire on Cynthia Drive at 5:46 p.m.
