Kalispell Invitational: Sherrill, Schulz on top
It may be unfamiliar territory for Glacier golfer Cody Sherrill, but he’s more than happy to be the front runner at the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament.
Sherrill carded six birdies, bogied just one hole (the par-4 17th) to finish with a sizzling 5-under-par 67 on the Championship 18 at Buffalo Hill Golf Club on Thursday.
That standout performance gave him a huge six-shot lead on Easton Enott of C.M. Russell.
Sherrill was the lone golfer to break par and it’s the first time he has led a high school tournament after the opening round this fall.
“I like having that lead,” Sherrill, who has been a contender in every outing, said.
“It’s a great feeling to wake up and go to the course on the second day when you have a good lead. Now you just try to keep it going.”
Sherrill was as steady as they come for the first 18.
“Hit a lot of fairways and greens,” he said.
“It’s kind of nice being home, feeling good and knowing the course.”
He nearly had a hole-in-one on the 112-yard par-3 12th hole. Using a 56-degree wedge, he came within inches of his second career ace.
“Just rolled to the left side of it (the cup),” he said.
Today’s play wraps up at Northern Pines, where he picked up his first ace.
Glacier’s Teigan Avery, who has led her share of tournaments this season, is flirting with her second-straight medalist honor. She shot a 5-over 79 and is two shots behind Coral Schulz of Whitefish.
“It was pretty solid,” Avery said of her round.
“There were just a couple of holes that got to me.”
Those holes were the par-5 13th and the par-4 14th. She had bogies on both.
“Short game,” she said of what let her down on those holes.
“Two bad chips and two really bad putts.”
Avery is coming off a medalist showing last week at Helena.
In three previous tournaments, she has finished second to three different players.
“I’ve been pretty much in the mix (at every event),” she said.
“I’m really good no matter what position (first, second or third) I’m at. I know it takes two days no matter if you are 10 strokes behind or 10 strokes ahead. I know a lot can happen.”
On the team front, the Great Falls High girls hold down first with a 348 total.
Whitefish and Glacier, both with 350, are tied for second.
Flathead, 391, is fifth.
Glacier, at 299, leads the boys team standings. C.M. Russell, 316, is second.
Flathead, 320, is fourth, Whitefish, 337, ninth, and Polson, 357, 10th.
