MISSOULA — Glacier freshman Annie Hill outran Bigfork’s duo of Makena and Bryn Morley to win the prestigious Mountain West Classic cross country meet at the University of Montana golf course on Saturday.

Hill continued the fantastic start to her high school career, finishing the race in 16 minutes, 39.64 seconds, nine seconds faster than All-American Bigfork senior Makena Morley.

“She was relaxed and did just what she was supposed to do,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said.

“I watched her on the course, I watch her in practice every day. She does that on a regular basis. No surprises to the coaching staff.”

Makena, racing for Bigfork for the first time this season, finished in 16:48.84. Bryn Morley, also a freshman, finished in 17:04.61.

Hill’s finish was the fifth fastest time in the nation this season, and Makena’s the seventh. Bryn’s finish is the 14th fastest.

Flathead freshman Kaitlin Wride cracked the top 15, finishing 13th in 18:37.65. Lauren Clark was 25th for the Bravettes in 19:09 and Elizabeth Thompson 31st in 19:18.74.

Whitefish was 21st as a team with 665 points, led by Sarah Latcham in 42nd place. Polson was 26th at 727 and was led by Malia Seeley in 92nd.

Columbia Falls finished 30th as a team, despite a 21st place finish by Samantha Mundel in 19:03.24. Eureka was 37th as a team with a 44th place finish from senior Alexandra Bartmess.

Bigfork junior Logan Morley led the local contingent on the boys side, finishing in fifth place in 15:26.15, the top placer from Class B and the third fastest from Montana.

The boys race was won by Brody Smith from Cody, Wyoming.

Glacier’s Kade McCutcheon finished seventh in 15:29.22 to lead the Wolfpack to its second straight team title at the event.

The top four scoring runners for Glacier finished in the top 27 overall with Brock Sandry in 16th, Tevyn Stetson in 25th and Logan Harmon in 28th. Ruben Castren finished 54th overall to give the Wolfpack a nine-point win over University High School from Spokane.

“The boys were outstanding,” McLean said.

“All the guys on the varsity ran very well. A bunch of guys on the JV ran well and are waiting to take a varsity spot. They’re battling for spots, that’s the type of competition you want to see.”

Flathead finished 10th as a team, led by a 34th place finish from Sylas Schutt in 16:21.77. Jake Perrin was 43rd, Jacob Calles 47th, Jordan Engel 89th and Robert Hafemeyer 102nd.
