Glacier, C-Falls ranked atop the state

There’s a pair of teams from the Valley perched atop the state in the latest Associated Press Montana high school football polls, released on Wednesday.

Glacier held on to the top spot in Class AA after defeating Hellgate 68-18 on Friday. Helena, who has been equally impressive in its 4-0 start, picked up one of the 12 first-place votes in its second place ranking. Great Falls C.M. Russell moved up to third, Billings Skyview fell one spot to fourth after suffering its first loss of the season and Bozeman moved into fifth as the top 2-2 team in the state. Flathead, ranked No. 5 last week, fell out of the rankings, but remained the top team receiving votes.

Also taking a top spot this week was Columbia Falls in Class A. The Wildcats came in as the unanimous No. 1 team in the class after top-ranked Dillon lost to Billings Central 28-20 on Saturday. Columbia Falls is one of two undefeated teams left in the class, with Corvallis (3-0) missing out of the poll as the first team receiving votes.

Laurel jumped four spots to the second ranking while Dillon slid down to No. 3. Billings Central ranks fourth and Belgrade fifth. Of the one-loss teams, many have traded losses this season, leaving a jumble other four spots behind Columbia Falls.

Bigfork held on to its 10th place ranking in Class B, with Fairfield holding on to its top spot, this week unanimously. Glasgow came in second, followed by Huntley Project, Forsyth and Jefferson (Boulder) in the top five. Choteau, Townend, Whitehall and Conrad round out the top 10.

Wibaux is the top team in Class C 8-Man and Stanford-Geyser-Denton the top in 6-Man. Hot Springs, which is 3-0 to start the season, is third in 6-Man.
