Whitefish rules NW-A divisional golf

COLUMBIA FALLS — It was a perfect day for the Whitefish High School golf program.
The Bulldogs had individual medalists in Coral Schulz and Cody Olson and they also captured the girls and boys team titles at the Northwestern A divisional golf tournament at Meadow Lake Resort.
Whitefish pulled off the same feat last year at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
Schulz, a junior, shot a 77 to take top honors by 11 shots.
Katie Fyall of Whitefish, 88, was second and Heather Frank of Polson, 98, was third.
The WHS girls tallied a 387 team total to finish well ahead of runner-up Frenchtown, 438.
Schulz played for Helena Capital last year, placing third at Class AA state.
Olson carded a 77 to edge teammate Mitch Young for the individual title by one stroke.
Olson was 11th at the divisional last year.
Jonny Cielak of Libby and Carson McDaniel of Polson tied for third with 82s.
The Whitefish boys turned in a 344 team total to finish well ahead of second-place Polson, 376.
“Kyle Long and his staff had Meadow Lake in great shape for the tournament and the course provided a tough challenge,” Columbia Falls coach Gene Marcille said.
“I was impressed with all of the competitors and the sportsmanship they displayed.
“The Whitefish teams really stood out having both the individual champions and capturing both team titles,” Marcille said.
“They’re good kids and they are really well-coached.”
The top two teams and top 15 individuals advance to the Class A state tournament in Hamilton Oct. 3-4.
Three-time state girls champion Polson did not have a full squad to post a team score. The Pirates did qualify three players for state.
