Soccer roundup: Johnson, Wildkats edge Whitefish

WHITEFISH — Ellie Johnson’s goal in the 37th minute gave Columbia Falls a tough 1-0 Northern A soccer victory over rival Whitefish on Saturday.

“A hard-fought game by both sides,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said.

“We had our chances on goal, they had theirs. We weren’t able to capitalize.”

Both teams had 14 shots on goals.

Kess Nelson had 10 keeper saves for Whitefish and Allison Gimbel totaled the same number for Columbia Falls.

Columbia Falls held a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-5.

Whitefish (4-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 league) plays at Polson on Thursday while Columbia Falls entertains Bigfork.

POLSON — Six different players scored goals for Polson, who rolled past Libby in Northern A action.

Linnea Madsen, who assisted on the first goal for Sarah Howell just two minutes into play, had back-to-back goals two minutes apart in the second half.

Howell assisted on four other goals.

Polson, up 4-0 at the break, outshot Libby on goal 24-2.

Libby plays at Bigfork on Tuesday while Polson entertains Corvallis.

WHITEFISH — Jared Johnson had a hand in all of the scoring for Whitefish, netting the first two goals at 12 and 23 minutes and then assisting on two in the second half for a Northern A victory over Columbia Falls.

Casey Ling and Sam Heutmaker had the second-half goals for the Bulldogs.

Daniel Skinner scored at 53 minutes for Columbia Falls.

Whitefish (6-2-1, 4-0-1) plays at Polson on Thursday while Columbia Falls entertains Bigfork.

POLSON — Two goals in the first 14 minutes was more than enough to carry Libby to a Northern A victory over Polson.

An own goal at seven minutes put Libby up 1-0 and Walter Briones scored seven minutes later with Colin Maloney assisting.

Libby had just seven shots on goal to three for Polson.

Libby plays at Bigfork on Tuesday while Corvallis travels to Polson.

HELENA —The Stillwater Christian Cougars grew a one-goal halftime lead into a victory over Yellowstone County Christian Home School.

In a game played in a torrential downpour, the Cougars relied on Schuylar Kauffman and Joe King. King finished with a hat trick while Kauffman netted two goals and had an assist.

The Cougars went into the break leading 2-1, but King and Kauffman combined for three second-half goals and the Cougar defense kept Yellowstone away from the net.

Stillwater outshot Yellowstone 25-8.

The Cougars host Priest River, Idaho, on Tuesday for a nonleague match.
