A warm, clear day at Legends Stadium led to a slew of state-qualifying marks on Tuesday at the Flathead Time Trials, a non-scoring track and field meet between 10 northwestern Montana high schools.

Glacier senior Keyawna Larson, the two-time defending state champ in the javelin, made the biggest mark at the meet, throwing the javelin 136 feet, 7 inches to win the event by more than 26 feet and record the longest throw in the state so far this season.

Whitefish’s Luke May, the defending Class A javelin champ, won the boys event with a throw of 190-7, 36 feet longer than any other competitors.

Bigfork freshman Haile Norred was the one of two multiple individual event winners, taking the girls 100-meter dash in 13.19 seconds and tying Valkyries teammate Marissa Hiza for the win in the high jump at 4-11. Columbia Falls’ Carla Nicosia won the 100 hurdles in 16.9 seconds and leapt 35-11 1/2 in the triple jump, both state-qualifying marks in Class A.

Glacier freshman Annie Hill won the 400 in 59.52 and ran a blazing fast anchor leg for the Wolfpack 1,600 relay to qualify for state in each. Hill’s final lap in the long relay kept plenty of distance for the victory despite a hard charge from Bigfork and fellow freshman Bryn Morley, who crossed the finish line more than 3 seconds back but still fast enough to post a state-qualifying mark for the Vals.

The top five runners in the girls 1,600 posted qualifying marks, led by Flathead’s Gillian Maness, who finished in a season-best 5:09.97. The Bravettes’ Kaitlin Wride won the 3,200 with a qualifying time of 11:58.59.

Glacier’s Melanie Gassaway and Tessa Krueger took the top two spots in the shot put, each with qualifying distances. Polson’s Lydia Bowman won the pole vault, clearing 9-3 to guarantee a spot at state.

Troy’s Sean Opland placed in four events on the boys side, winning the 400 in 50.93. He has already qualified for five events at state this season.

“I’m working around,” Opland said.

“I know what my set things are going to be. I’m messing around with a few other things just to see.”

Bigfork’s Josh Sandry posted the second highest jump in the state this season, clearing 6-3 to win the meet. He just missed his attempts to break the school record of 6-4, but feels it’s within reach this season.

“This is definitely something for me to build on,” Sandry said.

“I’m going to try to get up into the 6-6, 6-7 range. I think I can do it. I just have to get back in shape, get on my marks.”

Whitefish’s Jed Nagler, who won the 200 and placed in the 100, and Columbia Falls’ Kyler Burns also qualified for state in the high jump in a competitive field.

Polson’s Jacob Clairmont and Whitefish’s Keaton Grove traded wins in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Clairmont winning the 110 in 15.62 and Grove the 300 in 41.63, each qualified for state in both events.

Flathead swept the distance runs, Sylas Schutt taking the 3,200 and finishing third in the 1,600, while Braves teammate Jake Perrin won the 1,600 by more than two seconds. Bigfork’s Logan Morley finished second in the 1,600, as each of the top three finishers posted state marks.

Eureka’s Christian Langston won the 100 in a qualifying mark of 11.51 and the Lions’ Nolan Hofstee won the discus with a throw of 144-7. Bigfork’s Tyler Iverson also qualified for state in the discus with a toss of 143-4.

Troy’s Pate Scott finished second in the long jump but made the Class B qualifying standard of 20-81/4 in the process.

Most of the teams at the meet will be back on the track Saturday at the Missoula Invitational, one of the biggest meets of the early season.
