Legion baseball: Twins open season by splitting with Calgary

WHITEFISH — Defending Class A state champion Glacier opened the American Legion baseball season Saturday at Memorial Field by splitting a doubleheader with the Calgary RedBirds.

Glacier prevailed in the opener, scoring seven runs in the first two innings en route to an 8-7 victory.

Calgary scored seven runs in the first two inning of the second game to post an 8-5 victory.

No game details were available.

Glacier hosts the RedBirds in doubleheader play again today starting at 11 a.m.

A seven-run inning in both games carried the Helena Reps to a Class A doubleheader sweep of the Kalispell Lakers at Griffin Field.

Helena scored seven times in the third inning of the first game, then seven times in the sixth inning of the second outing.

Kalispell had a five-running inning in the fifth in the opener.

Jackson Pepe went 3 for 4 in the first game to pace the Lakers. Torin Bowden and Cade White were both 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Pepe was 3 for 3 in the second game. Haydn Schlepp and Brook Krause both went 2 for 3.

Krause had two RBIs.

“We hit the ball really well,” Lakers coach Jesse McFarland said.

“We gave them a few too many extra outs.

“The pitchers worked hard,” he added, “we just need to help them out.”

Kalispell (1-3) plays a doubleheader at Mission Valley on Saturday.

HELENA — Riley Pikens tossed a 2-hitter in the opener and three Helena pitchers held the Lakers to five hits and a single run in the second game to sweep the doubleheader.

Pikens struck out two Kalispell batters and did not issue a walk.

Patrick O’Connell had the hit for the Lakers.

Kalispell had five hits in the second game, one each by five different players.

The Lakers host Belgrade on Saturday at Griffin Field for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
