Softball roundup: Back-to-back no-hitters for Glacier's Williams

HELENA — Glacier junior pitcher Ali Williams had 31 strikeouts in back-to-back no-hitters of Helena High and Helena Capital on Saturday, earning a pair of victories to push the Wolfpack (13-3 overall, 8-2 Western AA) into first place.

“She was on, to say the least,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“Her riseball was working well today. She felt comfortable and was moving around, hitting spots. She got in a groove and was able to carry that through the day.”

In the opener against Helena High (8-5, 6-2), Glacier pushed its first run across in the fifth inning and exploded for four runs in the sixth. The Wolfpack added an insurance run in the seventh and Williams wrapped up the last of 18 strikeouts to earn the 6-0 shutout victory. It was her second no-hitter against the Bengals this season.

“I thought it was great,” Fors said. “In that first game we hit the ball pretty hard.”

The runs were harder to come by against Capital (7-5, 4-2), which held a shutout of its own until Glacier junior Christine Connolly took a 1-2 pitch deep to right center for a home run in the fifth inning. It was the only run of the game, and the only one the Wolfpack needed with Williams serving up 13 strikeouts, including three straight to close the seventh inning.

Williams now has four no-hitters this season and leads the state in strikeouts.
