LETTER: Sen. Tester urged to rethink Iran deal, funding for Planned Parenthood

| August 5, 2015 8:43 PM

There currently are two items being considered in the Senate that concern me enough to cause me to send Sen. Jon Tester an e-mail.

The first is the treaty with Iran as it relates to their nuclear program. I studied British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s agreement made with Hitler/Germany in 1938. History does repeat itself — and President Obama is using the same arguments that Prime Minister Chamberlain used to convince Britain and the world that his agreement would result in “Peace in our time.” Chamberlain stated that if the agreement was not approved, war would be the only result. As we know, the agreement was approved and only emboldened Hitler, and war was the result.

I urge Sen. Tester to put partisian politics aside, and do what I consider is right for Montana, and the United States, by voting against this misguided effort. Maintain the present sanctions against Iran, do not let President Obama’s misguided efforts lead us into the path of another war.

Senator, do what is best for Montana and this great nation of ours, and do not allow yourself to be pressured into voting for this agreement.

The second item of concern is the defunding of Planned Parenthood, as it relates to abortion. I believed that Sen. Tester was a moral person, yet he went along with his party and voted not to defund this organization.

Is the Democratic Party really more important than maintaining a moral position on legislation in the Senate? Sen. Tester’s vote was a severe disappointment to me, and to others who have discussed this subject with me.

Please, senator, reconsider your position, and in the future, vote to maintain your morals, rather than being just a good party member. —Dale B. Heldstab, Columbia Falls
