East-side Sun Road access extended through Oct. 4

| August 25, 2015 5:48 PM

East-side access to Logan Pass in Glacier National Park has been extended to Oct. 4.

Originally the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road was scheduled to close Sept. 20. However, road crews made “great progress on paving and road rehabilitation projects,” so access is being extended for two weeks, according to a news release from Glacier Park.

Road work will continue through and after Oct. 4. Some east side road pullouts may be closed due to road work and fire hazards. Starting Oct. 5, vehicle traffic on the east side will be restricted at St. Mary Campground.

On the west side, motorists will be able to drive to Logan Pass through the third weekend in October, weather permitting.

After Oct. 4, hikers and bicyclists will have access to the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road on weekends and evenings.

Some trails are closed on the east side of  Sun Road due to the Reynolds Creek Fire. For more information on trails and access, contact the park at 406-888-7800 or visit http://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/trailstatusreports.htm.

The free shuttle transportation service on Going-to-the-Sun Road will operate through Sept. 7.

Shuttles on the east side of Sun Road are currently running a modified schedule due to the Reynolds Creek Fire. East-side shuttles are stopping only at St. Mary, Rising Sun, Rising Sun Boat Dock, Gunsight Pass Trailhead, Siyeh Bend  and Logan Pass. West-side shuttles are running a normal schedule.

The Logan Pass Visitor Center will remain open through Sept. 30. The St. Mary Visitor Center will remain open through Oct. 4.
