LETTER: Lake County citizen chooses 'tribal option' on not paying taxes

| December 3, 2015 11:00 AM

Congratulations to the tribes in their acquiring of Kerr Dam. It is nice that our three Lake County commissioners, along with our state delegation, gave support to the tribes’ undertaking. It shows that our elected officials truly have all taxpayers interests in mind.

It is obvious that the commissioners gave careful thought to their endorsement. I am sure our governor and attorney general along with our state delegates where just as considerate in their support of the water compact. Again my congratulations to the tribes and the BPA, as well as the tribes and the BIA-owned and -operated irrigation project in a dazzling display of free enterprise inspired acquisitions.

As an aging taxpayer, who would like to remain in the home that I built, on land that I bought and paid for, with the dream of passing my efforts to my family, I find myself in somewhat of a dilemma. I’m running a little short on funds. It looks like I’m going to have to reorganize my farming activity with an eye to cutting costs and enhancing my income with added investment.

So in view of my dilemma I will no longer be able to pay my property taxes. But I do pledge to help whenever possible. The drought has provided me an abundance of dry sand which I can share with the county. I will continue to spend my Social Security income, as well as whatever farm income the Lord blesses me with, locally. I will cheer for the home sports teams and be willing to meet with the local officials as often as they like. Meaningful dialogue is a must, we’ll even sit at a table where we are eye level.

As to the schools, K-12 and university, roads, courts administration, etc., I am sorry. Until my ship comes in or the government sends me more grants, I simply can’t help out. I’m sure all my neighbors will understand and gladly pick up the slack. I am sure the commissioners will agree to my plan since they previously endorsed a plan that is similar. Until better times, my regrets and thanks. —Joseph G. Brooks, Ronan
