The Flathead Classic Sled Dog Race needs volunteers. The race is scheduled Feb. 28 to March 1 in Olney, 18 miles west of Whitefish off U.S. 93.

Race organizers will be on hand at 5 p.m. today at Coffee Traders in downtown Whitefish to recruit volunteers. No experience is necessary but a love for dogs is important.

There will be a list of areas where help is needed and an explanation of each duty, including dog handlers, start chute assistant, parking assistant, bag checker, helping teams on trail, snowmobile help, mutt pull organizers, timers, set-up, cleanup and more.

The mutt pull sponsored by Tailwaggers of Whitefish is a new event.

The group will supply a sled and harnesses. Junior mushers must bring helmets. Everyone is welcome to participate. Dogs must be at least 30 pounds or more and be brought on a leash.

There will be certificates and awards for the fastest team. Entry fee is a can of human food to donate to the veterans food pantry in Evergreen.
