Basketball roundup: Top-ranked Wildkats roll by Bulldogs

WHITEFISH — Top-ranked Columbia Falls easily overmatched Whitefish, routing the Bulldogs 78-22 in a Northwestern A conference girls basketball game on Saturday.

The Wildkats led 25-4 after the first quarter and 52-13 at halftime.

Ciera Finberg had a game-high 18 points for Columbia Falls, which also got 14 from Peyton Kehr.

There were 10 Wildkat players to score in the contest.

Haley Nicholson had six points to pace Whitefish.

Missoula Sentinel 49, Glacier 37

Turnovers and a tentative offensive approach by Glacier helped visiting Missoula Sentinel (14-2, 6-2) steal a Western AA victory from the Wolfpack.

Glacier, who came in averaging 12 turnovers per game, totaled 26 in this one.

“Offensively, we weren’t aggressive attacking their press,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said.

“We were very tentative against their 2-3 zone.”

Glacier struggled right off the bat and Sentinel capitalized.

Glacier beat Sentinel in Missoula earlier this season, 50-45.

“We started off just awful,” Salonen said.

“Down there, we were the aggressor. Here, they came to play, took us out of things we like to do offensively.”

Shannon Worster led Sentinel, and all scorers, with 16 points. She hit all 10 of her foul shots.

Tessa Krueger had 10 points for Glacier (13-3, 6-2).

Flathead kept the score close, but couldn’t keep pace with Big Sky and Eagles senior Maddy Shaide in the second half in Western AA conference play.

Shaide had 19 points and teammate Kendall Mooney had a game-high 20 points to lead Big Sky, which took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Bravettes 18-10.

Tiana Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Flathead. Taryn Gutierez had 13 points and Jessica Simmons 12 for the Bravettes.

BIGFORK — The Bigfork girls combined for 34 points in the first half as they ran away from Florence in their last game of the regular season.

Lana Berg had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Miranda Campbell scored 14 points in the Class B nonconference rout. Marissa Hiza and Katie Thomas added 11 each for the Valkyries.

Kourtney Kohlman and Autumn Brown each had nine points to lead Florence.

ST. IGNATIUS — Aurora Becquart scored 18 points and Kaitlyn Downey had 15 as Troy beat St. Ignatius in a Class B nonconference game.

The Trojans pulled away after halftime, outscoring St. Ignatius 11-4 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth after leading by just two points at the break.

Irene Lopez scored 13 points and Trinity Lewandowski had 11 for the Bulldogs.

MISSOULA — Missoula Sentinel pulled away in the fourth quarter to win a tight Western AA contest with Glacier.

The Spartans outscored Glacier (10-6, 4-4) by eight points in the final eight minutes to earn the season split in the series.

Sam McCamley, Jaxen Hashley and Truman Pisk each had eight points to lead the Wolfpack.

Sam Beighle had a game-high 12 points for Sentinel and Zaccheus Darko-Kelly added 11.

MISSOULA — Flathead fell behind Big Sky 16-4 in the first quarter and couldn’t fight its way back into the contest, losing a Western AA conference game.

Matt Marshall had 11 points to lead the Braves (4-12, 1-7), who played Big Sky even the rest of the contest.

Cory Diaz had a game-high 15 points for Big Sky, which saw four players score in double digits.

Cody Olson had 19 points to lead Whitefish.

Josh Sandry had 14 points and Adam Jordt and Ryder Trent each had 12 for Bigfork.

Jake Christopherson had 17 points to lead Florence.
