Basketball roundup: Glacier girls bounce back to beat Helena

Brielle Bumgarner posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ali Williams added 12 points as Glacier bounced back with a 56-36 Western AA girls basketball victory over Helena High on Saturday afternoon.

Glacier (14-4 overall, 7-3 league) bolted to a 17-7 first-quarter lead and put the finishing touches on a strong effort by outscoring the visiting Bengals 20-12 in the final frame.

Hailee Bennett tallied 10 points for Glacier and Taylor Salonen chipped in nine.

“It was nice to come off a rough night like last night and see the girls bounce back and battle,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said. “It was a good team effort.”

Glacier lost to top-ranked Helena Capital on Friday, 48-39.

The victory also secured a home state tournament play-in game next month for the Wolfpack.

Helena (7-11, 3-7) was led offensively by Jenna Starke with 10 points.

Glacier wraps up regular-season action with home games on Thursday with Missoula Hellgate and Friday with Flathead.

Rayna Pilgeram scored 17 of her team-high 20 points in the opening half as top-ranked Helena Capital rolled past Flathead in Western AA play.

Capital (15-2, 10-0) pulled away with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Bravettes 20-7 to take a 36-17 lead at the break at Flathead High School.

Flathead (2-16, 0-10) nearly matched Capital in scoring in the third period, but the Bruins owned the final eight minutes of play on the offensive end.

Tiana Johnson hit a season high 21 points to pace Flathead, and all scorers. The 6-foot-1 sophomore guard also had a season high five 3s.

Flathead concludes regular-season play this week, at Missoula Hellgate on Tuesday and at Glacier on Friday.

Henry Garrett added 12 for the victors and Chase Benson tallied 11.

Glacier was led by Jaxen Hashley, 13 points, and Kade McCutcheon, 10.

Helena High capitalized on a fast start, taking a 19-10 lead on Glacier in the opening quarter.

Glacier completes regular-season play at Missoula Hellgate on Thursday and home Friday with Flathead.

Capital (13-5, 8-2) was led by Daniel O’Malley, 15 points, and Gus Chancy, 12.

Flathead (4-14, 1-9) trailed 33-16 at the half.

Seth Adolph led Flathead in scoring with nine points.

POLSON — Matthew Rensvold netted 17 points and Peyton Lefthand tallied 14 as Polson clipped Whitefish in Northwestern A action.

Rensvold scored 11 points in the third period as Polson broke away from a 22-20 halftime lead to take a 38-26 advantage into the final eight minutes of play.

Polson (8-10, 4-4) has won four straight and five of its last six games.
