A winter storm warning was issued across Northwest Montana on Sunday afternoon, projected to last until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Significant snow accumulation was projected to build up Sunday night in the Flathead and Mission valleys. The storm warning predicted 10 to 16 inches through this afternoon with an additional five to 10 inches from this evening into Tuesday.

The snow will transition from powdery to heavy, wet snow, the warning said. This could lead to trouble for drivers as the roads become slick with snow pack and ice.

The weather service cautions against unnecessary travel, as roads are expected to be slick and drivers will experience reduced visibility. Travelers are advised to bring an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in Kalispell will be in the high 20s for the rest of the week, with lows in the low 20s and teens.

Whitefish Mountain Resort is expecting at least four solid inches of snow overnight but could see much more. Blacktail expects about as much new powder.
