Browning man sentenced in strangulation case

GREAT FALLS — A Browning man has been sentenced to almost three years in federal prison for strangling his girlfriend after becoming upset over what she was wearing.

U.S. District Judge sentenced Jordan James Lamott to 32 months in prison to be followed by three years supervised release during a Tuesday hearing in Great Falls. Lamott was found guilty of strangulation by a jury following a September trial.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says he’s the first defendant to be convicted at trial of strangulation since the adoption of a 2013 federal law aimed at reducing violence against women, including American Indians.

Authorities say Lamott became angry after his girlfriend wore a skirt to impress him and he strangled her until she lost consciousness.

The victim survived.
