Swimming: Fast times at The Summit

The long layoff over the holidays turned out to be more of a positive than a negative for swimmers from Flathead and Glacier high schools on Saturday.

Flathead individuals turned in 32 season-best times while Glacier had 25 at the Kalispell Invitational at The Summit.

“A meet with a lot of best times,” Flathead/Glacier swim coach Dave Lillard said.

“A great meet.”

The last competition for the two schools, along with Bigfork, Columbia Falls and Whitefish, was the Great Falls Invitational back on Dec. 20.

“Overall, we’re proud of how hard they are working,” Lillard said.

“Practices have gotten harder and harder and they continue to get stronger and stronger.”

Lillard said “we’re starting to make our selections for state,” so a lot of swimmers were really motivated to perform well at this outing.

The State Meet is Feb. 13-14 in Missoula.

On the team front, the Flathead boys (163) finished second behind Missoula Hellgate (356).

Hellgate (432) also won the girls team title with Glacier (190) third.

Individually, Glacier’s Nate Burnham was a double winner with event-best times in the 50 freestyle (23.61) and mixed 500 freestyle (5:12.35). The 500 freestyle time is a new school record.

Columbia Falls’ Colton Babcock won the 100 freestyle (49.92).

Glacier finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.37) with Jessica Loyda, Bailey Smith, Emma Hornby and Olivia Gibson. That time is one second off the school record.

Those same four swimmers placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Glacier’s James Bouda was second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.08) and the 100 backstroke (55.84) and Columbia Falls’ Zayne Friar was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (59.71).

Bouda’s times in both events are top five statewide.

Placing third were Smith in the 200 freestyle (2:18.95), Friar in the 200 freestyle (2:01.63), Glacier’s Carley Denton in the 100 butterfly (1:13.86), Flathead’s Sara Jensen in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.95) and Babcock in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65).

Jackie Stenberg — dropped four seconds in the freestyle and three in the 100 breaststroke;

Olivia Gibson — dropped eight seconds in 500 free, best time in the 100 backstroke;

Keegan Mackenstadt — dropped 24 seconds in the 100 breaststroke;

Meg Hornby — trimmed three seconds off her 200 freestyle time and shaved seven seconds off her previous best in the 100 breaststroke;

Luke Darron — dropped seven seconds in the 200 freestyle;

Nathan Moon — best time in 50 freestyle;

Sara Jensen — best time in 100 freestyle;

Greta Cole — best time by 10 seconds in the 100 backstroke;

Kendra Leaming — nine-second improvement in the 100 breaststroke;

Tor Jackola — best time in 100 freestyle by two seconds;

Daniel Olszewski — best time in 100 freestyle by 11 seconds;

Maddie Huestis — best time in 500 freestyle by 14 seconds.
