The Glacier High School speech and debate team took second place in the prestigious Conway Classic at Gonzaga University in Spokane this weekend.

The Wolfpack were outpointed only by Lake City High School from Coeur d’Alene, 270 to 218.

Glacier was the only Montana school in the field of 38 teams from 14 states.

“Scoring 218 points is awesome,” Wolfpack head coach Greg Adkins said.

“We had a great tournament and saw some great competition. The tournament offered some events and categories that we don’t normally compete in, and that proved to be the difference in the final sweepstake tally.”

Glacier swept the top four spots in Duo Interpretation while Anika Fritz (Expository) and Teigan Avery (Lincoln-Douglas Debate) won individual championships in their speech events.

Millie Espeseth, David Schwarz, Noah Hill and Ruben Castren all had top performances in debate.

Teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Texas and Florida competed in the Conway Classic.

Glacier competes this weekend in the Richest Hill on Earth Invitational in Butte. The Class AA State Tournament will be Jan. 30-31 in Missoula.
