Walburn said that whatever is in his head usually ends up on paper during his song-writing sessions.

“It can be all over the place, but it starts with the music,” Walburn said. “The lyrics come after, and they’re inspired by the music.”

Walburn’s musical style reflects the Montana scenery, from historical ballads to love songs and personal tunes, the music has an easy flow that tells a story about any one of life’s adventures. He said his biggest inspirations are the artists he listened to growing up in the 1960s and ’70s, such as the Beatles, James Taylor and James Brown.

Walburn has been playing at the Many Glacier Hotel for almost 15 years, six days a week, for both local audiences and tourists alike. His unique summer acoustic music shows start at 9 p.m. every Monday through Saturday downstairs in the St. Moritz room in the Many Glacier Hotel.

However, 2015 may mark Walburn’s last summer with the hotel, as they will be removing the stage this year. Instead, he’ll try to find a new place to take his talent.

The Singer/ Songwriter Showdown marks Walburn’s second competition of this nature — he has also participated in a the annual Country Showdown in the past. However, he said he’s just using the competition as a chance to have fun.

“This is a great venue for younger musicians to showcase their talent,” Walburn said. “It’s going to be a really fun time, and everyone should come out and take a listen.”

Walburn said he hopes there will some day be a venue where songwriters can gather and simply bounce ideas off one another to create beautiful new music.
