For Oshinn Reid, music is a chance to tell a story and express whatever thoughts she may have cooped up inside. Her biggest songwriting inspiration comes from the protest folk music of the 1960s and ’70s, which she said had such a strong message, they “demanded to be listened to.”

Some of Reid’s biggest inspirations are drawn from “oldies” musicians, such as Woody Guthrie and Will Oldham.

The Singer/Songwriter Showdown is Reid’s first competition of this nature, but she said she’s excited to get honest, practical feedback.

“I’m looking for direction,” she said. “I really want honest feedback on what works, or doesn’t, and how to fix it.”

Reid said the chance to compete came “out of the blue,” but she’s excited for the opportunities the event will create.

“These kinds of events help create the future of the music scene in this area,” Reid said. “They’re all about local music, which gives everyone a chance to hear all these great artists.”

Reid would like to dedicate time this year to becoming more involved in the local music scene. Next month, she is scheduled to perform a song in the Vagina Epilogues in Whitefish, and hopes to put out an album this year.
