Warm-up event offers help for veterans, others
A wide variety of free goods and services will be available today at Winter Warm-up: Come in from the Cold, a community event connecting individuals, families and veterans with resources and services.
Winter Warm-up will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Gateway Community Center, 1203 U.S. 2 W., Kalispell. Enter the building through the north entrance.
The event is designed for veterans, individuals and families who are homeless, at risk for being homeless or who are experiencing financial difficulties or challenges.
Winter Warm-up is a collaborative event sponsored by the United Way, the Gateway Community Center and the Project Homeless Connect Committee. More than 60 businesses and agencies are scheduled to participate.
Items to be given away include coats, scarves, mittens, socks, adult and children’s clothing, books, personal care items, sleeping bags, blankets and more.
Other assistance will include health services, free tax preparation, job leads, housing options, food and shelter resources, pet services, depression screening, disability resources and other community resources.
A total of 23 agencies will participate. Veterans are welcome to register for door prizes in the Veteran Service Area.
Opening ceremonies will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and special activities and music are scheduled throughout the day.
Schedule of events
10 a.m. to 7 p.m. — Agency representatives will be available to provide information and resources.
11 a.m. to 7 p.m. — Cafe Connect serves free hot meals
Noon — Face painting for children
Noon to 2 p.m. — Scott Free & Friends (guitar)
3:15 to 9 p.m. — Activities for children.
4:30 to 6 p.m. — Papa’s Jam (classic rock and blues)
7 to 9 p.m. — Concert by Tropical Montana Marimba Ensemble
A number of free learning sessions are planned on a variety of topics, including:
- Financial workshops
- Parenting classes
- Children’s activities
- Opportunities for youth to explore gifts and talents.
