A Troy-area man died this weekend after falling off a cliff near the west fork of the Yaak River.

Jesse Christopher Lowry, 45, was walking along a steep, rough trail and lost his balance, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. A report of the incident came into county dispatch at 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

The Upper Yaak Volunteer Fire Department, Troy Volunteer Ambulance and David Thompson Search and Rescue responded to the report.

Upper Yaak Fire Chief Michael Sanders noted that by the time he arrived, Lowry had been dead “for some time.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Lowry was walking the trail in sandals. He fell about 35 feet onto a hard rock surface. Officials say alcohol was a factor in the incident.
