Kalispell man charged with assaulting deputy

Lewis and Clark County authorities say a 34-year-old Kalispell man assaulted a deputy during an arrest near East Helena.

Howard Paul Ereaux has been charged in Lewis and Clark County District Court with felony assault on a peace officer and misdemeanor DUI.

Ereaux was pulled over on July 18. A deputy had responded to a report of a reckless driver and saw Ereaux’s vehicle crossing the center line, according to court documents.

The deputy conducted field sobriety tests on Ereaux, which he allegedly failed. He blew a 0.15 in a breath test, nearly double the legal limit.

According to the documents, Ereaux initially consented to a blood test, so the deputy brought him to the hospital. Approaching the entrance, the deputy told Ereaux that he would be going to jail.

A handcuffed Ereaux began to pull away and allegedly used his shoulder to knock the deputy to the ground as he tried to regain control.

There was a scuffle, but the deputy was able to control Ereaux on the ground until backup arrived.

According to court documents, the deputy noticed a gash on his forearm, as well as a smaller one on his finger. The deputy also noted pain in his shoulder.

The DUI is reportedly Ereaux’s third offense. Initial bail was set at $10,000. He is not currently listed on the Lewis and Clark County jail’s roster.
