LETTER: The desperate need for welfare reform

| July 22, 2015 9:00 PM

Welfare has become a “racket.” I have a welfare family living close to me. Because of the low wages in Montana, my welfare neighbor makes more money on welfare and food stamps than he could if he worked at a full-time job. These people are having one child after another and the American taxpayers are picking up the tab. The welfare parents live off the kids.

This year the new director of the VA asked Congress for $17 billion to overhaul the VA. Congress refused his request. Yet, Congress pays $400 billion each year to fund Medicaid. As a result, people on Medicaid, such as welfare recipients, are getting better medical coverage than most veterans. These facts make me ashamed to be an American and a veteran. —Sinowa Cruz, Kalispell
