Looming severe thunderstorms have prompted a flash-flood watch for the Glacier National Park area Monday.

The National Weather Service announced the watch from 3 p.m. Monday through Tuesday morning.

Strong thunderstorms are predicted for Monday afternoon and into the evening. More than a half-inch of rain could be produced in a half-hour, according to the Weather Service bulletin. The storms could bring hail as well.

Concentrated rainfall could produce rockslides and mudslides on Going-to-the-Sun Road, according to the Weather Service. Other steep terrain in the park could be subject to “excessive runoff.”

The Weather Service says that Monday storms could give way to a more steady, moderate rainfall overnight. Light rain is expected through Tuesday afternoon.

Rainfall totals through Tuesday afternoon could be 1 to 2 inches.
