Rob Akey is a well-known name in the local arts community. Beginning this month, his work will be displayed at the Dick Idol Signature Gallery in Whitefish.

“Montana is my inspiration,” Akey said. “[This gallery] is a perfect fit. I’m honored to be here.”

Akey said that he’s been showing art in Whitefish for 20 years, and currently makes a living as a full-time artist. Being part of the Dick Idol Signature Gallery, located in the heart of downtown Whitefish at 238 Central Ave., was a no-brainer.

“As an artist and businessman, I’ve always wanted to be with the best,” Akey said. “And in the past few years, I’ve watched the Idol gallery florish.”

To celebrate the new partnership, Akey will be the featured artist at the gallery during tonight’s Whitefish Gallery Nights event, from 6 to 9 p.m. in downtown Whitefish.

The Dick Idol Signature Gallery opened its doors in June 2012. Co-owner Toni Rae Idol said the gallery has been community-focused since the beginning, working to feature and support local artists as much as possible.

“We show some of the top Western artists in the United States,” Idol said. “We strive to keep Montana artists as the primary part of that group.”

When the gallery considers representing an artist, “it’s not just about selling the art,” Idol added. “It’s also being a partner within the community we serve.”

Akey said he respects and appreciates that attitude, and cites that as one more reason why partnering with the gallery is the perfect fit.

“[Toni’s] ability to reach out beyond the gallery, that’s crucial,” Akey said. “For artists to florish, you really have to reach beyond the gallery.”

Another important piece of the puzzle is community service, for both Akey and the Idol gallery.

Akey is already a pillar of community service in Whitefish, donating time and artwork to various causes and fundraisers through the years.

“It’s a great way I can contribute,” Akey said.

Both Akey and Idol said they are excited about the new collaboration.

“I’m just thrilled,” Idol said. “I look forward to working with Rob.”

Other local artists represented at the Dick Idol Signature Gallery include Sherry Sander; Rachel (Rusti) Warner; Colt Idol; Nancy Cawdrey; Paul Dykman; and Dick Idol.
