Legion baseball: Mavs thump Lakers
MISSOULA — A bad start ended with a 14-6 loss for the Kalispell Lakers AA on Monday evening against the Missoula Mavs in American Legion baseball play.
Missoula pushed six runs across the plate in the opening inning, added two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
“That (first inning)kind of set the tone,” Lakers manager Ryan Malmin said.
Six errors by the Lakers defense didn’t help matters, either.
“We’re the walking wounded,” Malmin said.
“We’re missing four guys, but by the same token, you have to handle adversity.”
Malmin expects all four players back by next week.
Kalispell did all of its scoring in two innings — three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Patrick O’Connell had two of Kalispell’s six hits in the outing.
Jayson Combs doubled for the Lakers.
Missoula clubbed 15 hits off four Kalispell hurlers.
Jonathan Mitchell and Ben Tabaracci led the Mavs’ attack with three hits each.
Kalispell is back in action Thursday at the Summer Palouse Tournament in Pullman, Washington. Play runs through Sunday.
