Heidi Schmid and Tyrell Toren, both of Kalispell, have qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo to be held in Rock Springs, Wyoming, next month.

Schmid, a junior, won the championship go-round on Sunday in pole bending at the Montana High School Rodeo Finals at Majestic Valley Arena.

Her strong performance at the six-day event also moved her to the top of the year-end standings. She came into the State Finals with 65 points, which tied her for 14th place.

Toren, a freshman, finished third in the bull riding year-end standings. He had the top ride on Friday, 71.5, but was bucked off during performances on Saturday and Sunday.

“I came into the short round (championship) No. 1 in the standings,” he said.

“I just messed up on my short-round bull.”

Toren said his bull “bucked in circles and I almost lost the hand that I was holding on with,” he said. “I was only holding on with my finger tips.”

Seconds later, his ride ended.

Toren came into the State Finals tied on top of the standings with a maximum of 70 points for seven rodeos.

The top four in the year-end standings in all events advance to the National Finals to be held July 12-18.

Bridger Fitzpatrick of Polson finished second in the year-end bull riding standings to qualify for the National Finals.

For the second-straight year, Nichole Lake of Polson wound up fifth in the goat tying year-end standings. She competed at the National Finals last year in breakaway roping.

Winning all-around honors were Caydee Johnson of Manhattan and Wrye Williams of Broadus.

No decision was made Sunday by Montana High School Rodeo officials on where the 2016 State Finals will be held.
