OPINION: Questions about the coming fire season

| June 20, 2015 9:00 PM

Excellent article in the Inter Lake on the increased fire danger this year.

However, where were the follow up questions and answers, such as:

1. If the next big concern is “The Fourth of July weekend... with fireworks,” why haven’t the governor, the respective county commissioners and city officials banned fireworks this season?

2. If “federal coordination center predicts the index to hit levels... as high as 97th percentile,” does the Forest Service intend to fight fires the same way it does when the when rainfall and snowpack are normal or above normal? Is the let-it-burn policy going to remain in effect? Or are they going to try to put out the little ones before they become catastrophic?

3. What does it mean that Montana was included on the conversation on drought involving Obama and six other governors? What resulted from the conversation other than predictions?

4. Is the EPA or CDC involved in any decision that impacts air quality if fires are as widespread as predicted?

5. Who is going to pay for the firefighters?

6.  Will there be enough firefighters if the Western United States and Alaska are all experiencing major fires?

In other words, where is the leadership? —Lana Batts, Lakeside
