Golf: Locals light it up
POLSON — The Montana State Golf Association’s State Junior Golf Championships kicked off at Polson Bay Golf Course on Tuesday, where five districts from around the state were represented.
Two-time defending Class AA high school state champion Teigan Avery of Kalispell leads the overall female standings, shooting a 75 in her first round to hold off a competitive and crowded field.
Avery, a student at Glacier High School, is vying for a second-straight Montana junior title.
Coral Schulz the defending Class A high school state champion for Whitefish is right on Avery’s heels, finishing her round with a 79 to sit in second place.
But she isn’t alone.
Hayden Flohr, Morgan O’Neil and Sydni Rose matched Schulz’s 79, converging a hefty pack of golfers chasing Avery for the elusive title.
On the boys side, Forsyth’s Danny Friez got off to a hot start. Friez shot a 65 at Polson Bay to lead all competitors.
Caleb Stetzner and Joey Moore trail Friez by two strokes, each carding a 67.
Moore, leading the 14-15 age group, is trailed by Libby’s Ryggs Johnston.
Johnston shot a 68 for sole possession of second in the age group and fourth overall. He is the defending champion at the Junior Championships.
Libby Logger Jonny Cielak and Flathead Brave Ryan Keenan each finished with a 71 to share the fifth-place spot in the standings.
Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak carded a 73 and is in a tie for ninth.
The final round of the championship tees off today at 7:30 a.m.
