OPINION: Only a small group fighting City Hall?

| June 25, 2015 9:00 PM

Recent letters in opposition to the plans for the new city hall in Whitefish allege that the majority of taxpayers oppose it. That may or may not be the case, but the only people I know who oppose it are the authors of the letters and a small group who share their views.

We do know for a fact that the majority of Whitefish voters elected the City Council and mayor and to make decisions on their behalf. I think it is ill-advised to call for a plebiscite on decisions some disagree with. It could be interpreted as the effort of losers to win an election they lost.

Whitefish has changed much since I grew up here in the 1930s. Old  landmarks such as the Cadillac Hotel are gone, but many of the buildings and businesses in the city core remain or have evolved to preserve the charm of Whitefish 80 years ago. Our city government over the past decades deserves credit for maintaining that charm and should remain part of the core, and I hope beauty and quality are major considerations in the construction of city hall. —Larry Rooney, Whitefish
