Legion baseball: Twins win Ed Gallo opener

WHITEFISH — The 26th annual Ed Gallo Wood Bat Tournament kicked off in Whitefish on Thursday with seven teams competing for the championship.

The host Glacier Twins played in the opening-day night cap, facing the Olympia Volkswagen (Washington).

Olympia defeated the Calgary Redbirds in the first game of the tournament, earning a spot in the opening-day finale.

After five scoreless innings, the Twins busted things open in the sixth.

Glacier scored five runs in the late-game rally, pushing two more runs across in the top of the seventh.

Glacier held Olympia in check on their way to a 7-0 victory.

The Twins slapped 15 hits in the shutout.

Jayce Fagerland led all batters with four hits while teammate Austin Robins added three.

Tyler Murphy and Kyler Howke each had two RBIs for Glacier. Vincent Smith finished with two hits and an RBI.

AJ Wetsch pitched 5 2-3 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out nine batter to earn the win.

Glacier held Olympia to five hits.

Olympia will take on the Glacier 15u All-Stars today at 11:45 a.m.

The Twins will face a familiar foe today at 8 p.m.

The Glacier Twins B team picked up two wins on the day, defeating the Glacier 15u All-Stars 5-4 before taking down the Missoula Prospects 13-11 to earn a trip to the night game against the A squad.

The Prospects split their opening day of the tournament, beating the Bitterroot Red Sox B 5-2 in their first game of the day.

The double elimination tournament, although guaranteeing each team three games, said goodbye to the Calgary Redbirds’ title hopes after they dropped their opener 4-3 and their second game of the day, 7-1.

Play resumes today at 9 a.m. at Memorial Park in Whitefish.
