Libby, Troy heat tops century mark

The promised heat wave edged into Northwest Montana on Friday, sending the thermometer soaring to triple digits in Lincoln County.

Libby’s high was 101 degrees and Troy hit 100, according to the National Weather Service.

Kalispell’s high reached 93 degrees as of 6 p.m.

Blistering heat also affected St. Regis (101 degrees), Trout Creek (100), Plains (102) and Thompson Falls (99).

Other high temperatures were 98 in Eureka, 92 in West Glacier, 93 near Whitefish, 94 in Hungry Horse and 94 in Polson.

The real heat is expected to set in today, with a high of 99 degrees forecast in the Flathead Valley.

Sunday’s high is predicted to reach 101 degrees in Kalispell.

Either would be record highs for those dates. The all-time high for June 27 is 90 in 1987 while the record high for June 28 is 92 set in 2007.

Slight cooling is expected Monday, with a high of 94, but the heat is expected to remain all next week with temperatures topping 90 every day through Friday.

A heat advisory for the weekend from the Weather Service warns: “If you work or spend time outside, when possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.”
