POLSON — The Mission Valley Mariners fancy the dramatics.

At least they did on Tuesday with a pair of one-run wins to sweep an American Legion double-header against the Missoula Mavericks A, taking the first game 2-1 and the nightcap 7-6.

In the opener, Mission Valley ace Derek Peel dominated the Mavericks’ batting order. Peel gave up just six hits in his complete-game victory, striking out four batters in the process.

He allowed just one run — in the top of the seventh.

Trailing 2-0 since the fifth inning, the Mavericks pushed a run across to cut the deficit in half, but couldn’t quite solve the arm of Peel to complete the comeback.

Nyqolas Gillingham led the Mariners’ offense with a perfect 3 for 3 performance at the plate. Gillingham finished with an RBI and a double.

Micah McClure also drove in a run in Game 1.

Both teams got off to a quick start in Game 2.

The Mariners responded to Missoula’s four-run second inning by scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the inning, re-taking the a 5-3 lead.

The Mavericks tied it up in the top of the seventh only for Mission Valley to answer with a run for a walk-off victory.

McClure added three more RBIs in the nightcap and teammate Jacob Harrod added two.

The Mariners, who out-hit Missoula 9-6 in the opener, managed just six hits in Game 2 — aided by four Maverick errors.

The Mariners will look to continue their winning ways during their Firecracker Tournament on Thursday.
