Glacier National Park’s Camas Road is open to biking, with plowing on other roads in the park starting Wednesday.

Park spokeswoman Denise Germann said some plowing has begun on the Chief Mountain Road on the east side of the park.

Going-to-the-Sun Road, a popular route for cyclists and pedestrians each spring before it opens up to vehicle traffic, will be open in sections as plowing moves along.

“Once we start plowing it and we have access for bikes in a safe manner, it will be open to hiker-bikers. We don’t have to wait until the plows get to the top,” Germann said. “We’ll open it as far as we think is safe.”

Conditions permitting, once the plowed portions of the road start to open up, weekends will be “unlimited” for visitors, meaning they can bike or hike as far as the road is plowed.

Once plowing begins, daily status updates and interactive maps can be checked online by visiting www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/goingtothesunroad.htm.

Vehicles currently can drive on Sun Road as far as Lake McDonald Lodge on the west side and the foot of St. Mary Lake on the east side of Glacier Park.
