Permanent levy in Somers-Lakeside found unacceptable

| May 2, 2015 9:00 PM

Regarding the Somers/Lakeside school levy up for a vote on Tuesday, May 5:

This is a permanent levy. It goes on forever.

My concerns are:

1) Levy money going into the general fund.

There should be a separate account for levy monies and all transactions. Levy money does NOT belong in the general fund.

2) It does not appear that maintenance has been a priority in the past. These problems did not happen overnight.

3) Staffing should be a part of the general fund and does not belong in this levy.

I certainly agree there are problems. However, other than on the absentee ballot, the permanent levy was used very little.

Perhaps this levy should go away. Present a levy to the taxpayers with a definite time frame and with the facts and figures included in the full-page ad.

The last sentence of the district’s ad said, “When projects are completed, levy amount can be reduced or cancelled per board action.”

Here’s my question. When did you ever hear a trust fund baby say, “Don’t send any more money. I have enough...”? —Marlene M. Kilpatrick, Lakeside
