A Wisconsin man owes the state $2,235 in fines and restitution after mistakenly killing a grizzly bear while black bear hunting near the Wilderness Lodge in the Spotted Bear Ranger District on Saturday.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Game Warden Perry Brown responded to and investigated the shooting.

“The hunter was cooperative and gave a detailed account of what happened,” a press release from the state agency said.

Richard Kutcher, of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, was ordered Monday by Flathead County Justice Court to pay the fines.

The agency recommends that all bear hunters take the Black Bear Identification Program instruction multiple times before heading out on their hunt. The program can be found online at http://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter/bearID/.
