Secure your trash on way to dump

With the highway spring cleanup underway, it is so good to see our roads taking on a fresh look compatible with the spectacular scenery that surrounds this valley.

We owe this improvement to the many committed volunteers who perform a valuable community service every year! Sadly, it takes only a few days for the debris to make an appearance once again.

Our litter is not the typical highway trash. Much of it is household garbage and construction materials blown from vehicles with unsecured loads. Far too many of us ignore the county ordinance which requires these loads to be secured, resulting in much debris thrown along our roadways.

One only has to travel to neighboring communities and Canada to find that we can do a much better job in keeping our valley clean.

Resolution of the problem lies with enforcement of and compliance with the litter ordinance. Surely the effort to secure these loads isn’t that great. Compliance can be easy — for the benefit of all of us and our visitors! —Wayne A. Miller, Kalispell, Flathead County Solid Waste District Board member
